Looking forward to the Professional Learning Community! Goal, Hopes, and More

What is a professional learning community and why be in one? I’ve had the fortune of being in a positive, growth-focused professional learning community (part of the Quality Enhancement Plan) at UT Arlington since 2012!

Co-Facilitators are: Melanie Mason (Dept. of Communications) and Nila Veerabathina (Dept. of Physics). The project is led by Andrew Clark and supported by the Provost’s office. Justin Dellinger (UTA Link Lab) helps behind the scenes.

At my university, we have a Professional Learning Community comprised of faculty and staff who gather about once or twice a month to collaborate, talk, and work towards learning together on a shared topic. We apply our knowledge towards a spring project which is focused either on best practices or action-research and individual, but around a common theme, in this case, virtual teamwork.

This year I will be facilitating-as part of team-a professional learning community. The goal of the group is multi-faceted: 1) learn together 2) grow together professionally around a shared subject: virtual teamwork in higher education teaching and 3) network. These all go together. PLC’s are an informal way to share ideas, talk outside of the constraints of formal meetings (although we will be gathering together at designated times).

Some of the topics we will be talking about (starter list of broad-based questions to consider):

  1. What is virtual teamwork? How does it function across various subjects inside and outside of higher education? What frameworks of learning and development inform virtual teamwork (e.g., networked learning, distributed learning).
  2. Who is doing the teamwork? Examples: instructor-focused virtual teamwork; instructor-staff teamwork; instructor-student teamwork (e.g,. digital mentoring);
  3. What are the tools of virtual teamwork and what are the “best practices” of connecting, both formally and informally?
  4. What are useful and practical ways to incorporate virtual teamwork into online and/or face-to-face courses? We will likely take a baby steps approach here and not try to bite off too much right away.

I’m a huge fan of the cross-pollination approach to learning, informally, where we can share ideas across departments and content areas. I love that PLC is a semi-grassroots, yet sanctioned, way to learn together. Looking forward to sharing ideas!

In addition, we’ll likely have some guest speakers and will be reading from three books and some additional readings. The three books from Harvard Business Press are:

1. Leading Virtual Teams

2.   Virtual Collaboration

3.   Running Virtual Meetings

Drawing on ideas from Jennifer Thoma, Amy Hutchison and colleagues (Thomas, Hutchison, Johnson, & Stromer, 2017) on facilitating PLC’s we will discuss and do the following in our meet-ups. Some of the meet-ups will take place virtually so we can enact the ideas of virtual teamwork:

  1. Talk about our aligned mission and aims.
  2. Regularly reflect on our teaching practice.
  3. Engage in reflective discussion.
  4. Provide feedback to one another on application of ideas to teaching, our own professional development, and new learning.
  5. Maintain a focus on learners.

Looking forward to a great year of learning, networking, and productively hanging out!!!!

Last year’s projects are here and overview video highlights are here!

suppose you composed a catchier post title? I mean,
I don’t want to tell you how to run your website,
but what if you added a post title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Looking forward to the Professional Learning Community!

Goal, Hopes, and More – Virtual Gadfly: Moving
Forward into the Future of Learning is a little boring.
You should glance at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create
post titles to grab viewers to open the links.
You might add a related video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve
written. In my opinion, it would bring your website a little bit more interesting.

  11. Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long)
so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly
enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.

Do you have any tips for rookie blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

  12. Does your blog have a contact page? I’m having problems locating it but, I’d like to
shoot you an email. I’ve got some suggestions for your blog
you might be interested in hearing. Either way, great site and I
look forward to seeing it develop over time.

  13. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my
blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have
some experience with something like this. Please let me
know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

yourself? I wouldn’t mind producing a post or elaborating on a few of the subjects you write regarding here.

  17. Nicely done & written my friend.
I began writing a blpog myself just recently and have seen that many blogs simply rehash old content but add
very little of worth. It’s fantastic to see an insightful write-up
of ssome actual value too me, as a reader.
It is going down on the list of factors I need to emulate being a new blogger.
Visitor engagement and material value are king.

Some awesome thoughts; you’ve absolutely got on my list of blogs
    to watch!

    Carry on the great work!
    Congratulations,
    Ingmar
